Description

Knowable Magazine, an award-winning online publication dedicated to exploring science research through a journalistic lens, is seeking an Associate Editor to help to seek out and craft compelling stories and infographics. The full-time position will be based in our Palo Alto, Calif., office. Telecommuting may be considered for an exceptional candidate. 

You will work in close collaboration with our Knowable Magazine editors and Art Director to develop, research and write explanatory infographics to accompany longer feature stories; help to identify and write short briefs for the weekly newsletter; identify, assign and edit short articles and Q&As for the magazine; and seek out, report and write compelling news features, explainers and essays exploring current scientific topics.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Helping to identify and develop story ideas: Edit shorts and Q&As (2 to 4 per month). Assist with other edits as needed. Approx. 35% of time.
  • Performing infographic research and development: Work with the Art Director and editors to develop in-depth explanatory infographics. This may include original reporting, coordinating with freelance writers and illustrators, commenting on drafts with the art director and writing captions. (2 to 3 per month) Approx. 30% of time.
  • Reporting and writing articles: Using news judgement and a solid understanding of science, will identify, report and write articles for the magazine on the broad array of scientific and scholarly topics covered in the Annual Reviews journals (approximately 1 item per month). In addition, identify and write brief items for the weekly Knowable newsletter (1 to 2 per week). Approx. 35% of time.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • A graduate degree in science or science communication + at least 3 years of science journalism experience or a BA/BS in science or journalism + 5 years journalism experience covering science or biomedicine and writing on deadline.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. 
  • Advanced MS Word skills
  • The capacity and proven ability to write compelling stories, from features to news pieces to explainers, across multiple scientific fields
  • A proven flair for storytelling, in both written pieces and infographics
  • Excellent verbal, written & interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong news judgment and eye for compelling stories that would be of broad interest
  • Knowledge of science issues and research practice
  • A strong work ethic, professional demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with academics
  • Ability to read and understand technical scientific articles and figures
  • Ability to work on tight deadlines
  • Ability to respond positively to edits and other feedback
  • Strong interviewing skills and organizational skills
  • Positive, can-do attitude & ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to analyze situations effectively, prioritize tasks, work independently, and self-manage
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of time
  • An educational background in science and/or journalism
  • Passion for science and technology
  • Some experience or interest in editing
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, ability to adjust focus and color vision in order to perform fact checking to ensure that the colors on graphs, maps and photos match legends or captions.
