Summary: The Associate Director of Resource Development develops the National Immigrant Justice Center’s (NIJC) strategic and annual fundraising plans; maximizes contributions from public and private prospects through grant writing, appeals, special events and other campaigns; and identifies individual donors and new institutional support, including private foundations and governmental donors.  The Associate Director oversees grant development and gift stewardship. Fundraising targets will be developed jointly with the Executive Director and the successful candidate.  The Associate Director will be responsible for helping move NIJC from an $8 million organization to a $10 million annual budget.  The Associate Director will be responsible for NIJC’s Annual Human Rights Awards luncheon with a fundraising target of $1.5 million or more annually ($1.2 million raised in FY18).  This position collaborates closely with the Executive Director, Leadership Council and senior management. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Grants and Fundraising

  • Defines resource development strategy in collaboration with the Executive Director to maximize private and public contributions and to diversify NIJC’s donor base.

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining organizational relationships with individual and institutional donors.

  • Oversees grants management process including but not limited to researching donor prospects, writing letters of inquiry and grant proposals, compiling statistics and supplemental information, maintaining records related to project activities and producing progress reports.

  • Manages database to track grant submissions, donors, contributions and prospects; generates reports to inform NIJC’s fundraising strategy.

  • Coordinates planning and execution of NIJC’s annual Human Rights Awards luncheon for 1200 people. Prepares sponsorship and other materials to support solicitations, selects awardees and increases attendance.

  • Prepares year-end giving and other direct mail solicitations; works with support staff to maintain donor records and accurate data entry; and cultivates and maintains relationships with individual donors.

  • Assists in the messaging and development of print and digital promotional materials, website content, and special publications.


  • Contributes to the development of NIJC’s annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Chief Operating Officer. Works with finance to produce grant and contract budgets.  

  • Ensures that all donors receive appropriate acknowledgement for their gifts.

  • Assists the Executive Director in developing and implementing a donor engagement strategy.

  • In collaboration with finance staff, produces revenue projections and other financial reports.


  • Prepares performance evaluations for assigned staff inclusive of duties and responsibilities in relation to work quantity and quality.

  • Manages hiring, discipline, promotion, and other relevant employment transactions, within defined parameters.


  • Project Management – Develops project plans and realistic action plans based on data-driven analysis; Creates project budgets; Communicates changes and progress to stakeholders; Completes projects on time and budget; Manages project team activities through timetables, metrics reporting, and visual presentation.

  • Relationship Management – Communicates purposes, goals, timelines, and strategies clearly; Establishes action plans for constituent interactions; Manages multiple stakeholders with varying agendas with respect.

  • Written Communication – Writes clearly and informatively; Edits work for spelling and grammar; Varies writing style to meet needs; Presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.

  • Problem Solving – Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem-solving situations; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a self-starter and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience required. Master’s degree preferred. Experience in development, including familiarity with online fundraising and communications tools preferred. A proven track-record in successful revenue growth in the non-profit sector.

  • Broad Understanding of Philanthropic Community: The successful candidate has a broad understanding of the non-profit, human rights philanthropic communities, locally, nationally and internationally. The ideal candidate has significant fundraising experience (with an emphasis on major gifts, corporate partnerships, and campaigns), and relationships with both local and national foundations, including those that support human and immigrant rights.

  • Language Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; Raiser's Edge; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.

  • Other Skills: Commitment to NIJC’s mission advocating for access to justice and human rights protections for all, particularly for immigrants and refugees.
