Maintenance Worker - YRS      

Summary The position is responsible for maintaining the sanitary and safe living and working environment of the buildings within the division of Youth & Residential Services (YRS), performance of scheduled and unscheduled custodial and maintenance tasks, and responding to unforeseen building operation and general program issues at YRS residential facilities.  The employee in this position at a residential facility may be required to remain on Agency premises during break and or meal periods.  Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a decent, safe and sanitary living and working environment inside and outside of the buildings within the division of YRS.
  • Performs daily routine janitorial functions.
  • Tracks inventory of supplies and other goods and submits reorder requests in a timely manner.
  • Assembles clothing packages for program participants.
  • Unloads deliveries from vehicles, transports deliveries to appropriate destination within YRS buildings, and unloads deliveries in an organized manner consistent with the inventory system.
  • Uses common hand and power tools, such as hammers, drills, and wrenches for assemblies and repairs.
  • Adheres to maintenance calendar and follows checklists to perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building systems operate efficiently and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Records description of maintenance or repair work into log and reports on progress to supervisor on a regular basis.
  • Adheres to and performs duties specified by the management team of the program at which work is being performed
  • Reports hazardous or emergency conditions and identifies maintenance and repair needs
  • Performs preventive maintenance
  • Attend required meetings
  • Attend required training programs

Additional duties:

  • May be required to occasionally monitor the milieu area.
  • Monitor general work areas as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: Five years of comparable experience, or a combination of relevant training and comparable experience.
  • Language Skills:  Fluency in a second language may be required.  Ability to read, understand and interpret equipment and instruction manuals.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communication Skills: Providing information to supervisor or other management personnel by telephone, in written form or in person.
  • Physical Ability: Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Ability to remain standing for the majority of a shift.
  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  • Other Qualifications:  A valid driver’s license may be required.

Work Environment: Each YRS program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year.  Employees of YRS need to be willing to be flexible in regards to work location and scheduling, each of which may be altered by program management at any time.  Employees must be willing to perform any maintenance duty that may be required due to the needs of the program. 

  • Three primary shifts are scheduled each day including weekends and holidays.  Employees may be required to work any one of these shifts.
  • All employees share responsibility for the cleaning and basic maintenance of our facilities.
    • The employee may be required to remain on Organization premises during breaks and/or meal periods and may be required to stay on Organization premises until their replacement arrives.
  • Crisis prevention and behavioral management techniques may include physically restraining and removal of participants from immediate area.
