Johnson Matthey are currently recruiting a Research Scientist in Johnson Matthey’s rapidly expanding Battery Materials business, which is a material science and electrochemistry-based business with global reach. This role will be at the heart of the activities focused on developing and scale up of battery material manufacturing processes, which will enable JM to supply market leading products into a rapidly expanding market for automotive batteries.

The successful job holder will work in a lean team with a start-up mentality driving to become a world-class large-scale producer, contributing to the delivery of key process development programmes which will have significant impact to the Battery Materials business. This will require excellent scientific knowledge combined with practical skill to develop and scale-up technology from lab to pilot scale. 

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental programmes to inform process development and scale up activities
  • Ensure hazards associated with all project activities are identified and managed 
  • Establish and maintain detailed data sets to help inform and direct ongoing iterations of improved materials synthesis and advise product development teams of notable process improvements
  • Review data sets and report findings to wider team in compelling, concise and accurate reports, presentations, discussions, etc
  • Hands-on support of scale-up activities (internal and external locations)
  • Review relevant literature to develop wider understanding of battery materials processes
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to investigate process parameters to support process design

Are you the ideal candidate?


You will:

  • Be educated to degree level in chemistry or materials science (or equivalent experience)
  • Have practical chemistry experience, with attention to detail in experimental work
  • Have a stringent attitude to working safely
  • Have experience in analysing, interpreting, and reporting data
  • Have close attention to detail and focus on quality of delivery, with excellent verbal/written reporting skills
  • Be a strong communicator and team player
  • Be a motivated and energetic person – keen to learn about new materials and technologies
  • Ideally have practical experience in upscaling processes
  • Ideally have experience of chemical process/product development
