As part of a small mechanical team within the Product Development and Innovation department, reporting to the mechanical engineering manager, this role will be required to design for all the company’s current and future product range. This can cover a wide range of products – electronic devices requiring exacting product design, intended for medium-volume manufacture; subsea inspection devices which must function at ultra-deepwater pressures; specialised machines and mechanisms for deploying measurement devices in all kinds of environments, requiring creativity and insight.

The role requires the post holder to work within multi-disciplinary teams, to pursue robust engineering designs to cost, specification and schedule. It is important that candidate can perform engineering calculations unsupported and is conversant with 3D CAD modelling/drafting, can generate bills of materials, document registers, and supporting documentation for build packs. The role also involves coordination of manufacture with suppliers.

Key responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components, systems and assemblies, in line with design constraints and specifications. To produce safe and functional products.

  • Perform CAD and drafting to the required company standard using Solidworks.

  • Develop ideas and use 3D printing to create prototypes.

  • Produce products and solutions conformant with applicable standards and current regulations.

  • Perform and document design calculations and analysis using the appropriate tools.

  • Plan for verification and testing throughout the design process and maintain suitable design documentation.

  • Work independently, self-manage time and plan work and engineering activities after guidance from other engineers and managers within the business.

  • Liaise with internal customers, agree on delivery of engineering items and products, and then deliver on agreed schedule.

  • Liaise with engineering suppliers to ensure feasibility, and complete definition of components.

  • Take part in design SPRINT and other agile based product design and development events.

Are you the ideal candidate?

Essential qualities:

Qualified to Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering

Experience with 3D CAD – able to model parts and assemblies efficiently and produce clear, correctly dimensioned and toleranced drawings. Skilled with Solidworks or another 3D CAD system.

Understanding of mechanical design. Able to design components of suitable strength, fit and function. Competent selection and specification of bearings, seals, o-rings, fasteners etc. Able to carry out and document engineering calculations.

Strong on selection of engineering materials and manufacturing processes.

Experience of bringing products into existence. Able to manage suppliers and quotations, select appropriate bought-in components, and determine suitable testing requirements for new components and products. Management of product development from inception to completion.

Desirable qualities:

Design of offshore and subsea equipment.

Awareness of the oil and gas and petrochemical industries: typical design codes, materials and techniques.

Experience of safety-critical and hazardous area equipment
