We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineer/Chemist to join our team at Johnson Matthey.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the Development SCAT (Synthetic Catalyst Activity Testing) facility at our Royston Technology Centre, providing technical and engineering support for the customer and development as well as the supervision of the Development SCAT Engineer team.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading the Royston Development SCAT Laboratory engineer team, managing and ensuring the most effective use of resources (both people and equipment) to meet the testing requirements of customers within the required timescales.

  • Ensuring that department goals are translated into performance objectives for the Development SCAT Engineers, including conducting the appraisal process and supporting the development of individual PDPs.

  • Developing short and medium-term strategies for equipment and software, modifications and upgrades to meet customer demands and improve operations.

  • Plan and manage OpEx and CapEx projects up to a value of £500k.

  • Liaising with customers from the Development and Application teams to understand testing requirements and developing subsequent organisation and equipment resource plans to meet customer and business demands. Working with customers to resolve conflicts and agree priorities.

  • Providing technical expertise on the testing processes to other stakeholders within JM.

  • Maintaining a close technical relationship with key equipment suppliers to input into equipment improvement and future equipment development.

  • Ensure the safety of processes in the laboratory and carrying out proper investigations of incidents.

  • Facilitate continuous improvement projects across the engineer team to maximise efficiency.

  • Ensure compliance with customer and legislative requirements, always giving due consideration to EHS, Quality Standards and Sustainability.

Are you the ideal candidate?

  • Technical engineering or chemical degree or equivalent demonstrable technical competence

  • Experience managing a technical testing or production process

  • Experience creating technical reports and specification documents

  • Proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of complex technical data

  • Strong knowledge of MS products – especially Excel and PowerPoint

  • Project management and resource coordination experience

  • Experience of staff supervision and management would be advantageous

  • Knowledge of an emissions testing facility is desirable

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written with diverse stakeholders
