Platinum Group Metal Services (PGMS) is one of four businesses within the Efficient Natural Resources Sector that manages, distributes, refines and recycles precious metals and fabricates products using precious metals and related materials.  The business unit also manufactures platinum group metals, minor metal compounds, organometallics and fine metal powders for high technology applications, as well as providing a range of management services for platinum group metals.

PGMS has manufacturing operations in the UK, US and China and sells to key markets globally across Europe, the US and Asia.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced chemist to join our development team carrying out development trials for refining operations. In this role you will be part of the overall Global Refining technical department. You will be part of a team of chemists responsible for developing new PGM refining processes for the PGM Refining business and providing support to the existing plants as issues occur.  

This role will involve travel to other Johnson Matthey UK sites.

Key responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning and carrying out development trials to provide support to the refining operations.
  • Taking on the responsibility for a development laboratory, setting and upholding high EHS standards at all times including completion of appropriate risk assessments.
  • Ability to propose innovative and practical solutions to overcome challenges
  • Processing and interpreting results from trials to determine progress and next steps.
  • Communicating results through presentations and reports
  • Developing expertise in precious metal chemistry and growing knowledge by familiarisation with the refining plants and regularly reviewing new techniques and literature.
  • To carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed

Are you the ideal candidate?

You will:

  • Be degree qualified in chemistry or equivalent
  • Experience in a relevant development role with practical industrial laboratory experience
  • Have strong trouble-shooting skills with an ability to implement innovative and practical solutions.
  • Be able to communicate technical information effectively, with strong written and verbal reporting skills.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to the needs of the business and achieve results within tight deadlines
  • Experience of risk assessments such as COSHH, manual handling
  • Previous experience of Precious metal chemistry would be advantageous
