Communications Specialist

Starting Rate / Salary: $27.50 negotiable based on experience

Reports To: Communication and Member Relations Supervisor

Supervises: No Supervisory Responsibilities



Education:  Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.


Experience: Prefer one year experience in the communications field; ideal candidate possesses experience in electric utility industry.



  •  Excellent written and oral communication and professional presentation skills to tactfully and courteously communicate with the general public, members, and fellow employees.
  • Proven ability to create, produce and disseminate high quality materials in an effective, efficient manner.
  • Proficient in word processing. Knowledgeable in Adobe products for layout and graphics, video and photo editing software.
  • Knowledge of digital photography, photo composition and layout, and videography.
  • Competent in coordinating projects with other employees and capable of working effectively as a team member.

  • Ability to multi-task, consistently meet deadlines, prioritize changing workloads and identify and solve problems.

  • Conduct must reflect a professional image when in contact with members, general public, and employees.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend functions and educational events relevant to position.


Other Requirements:  Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.

Typical Responsibilities Include

This position is responsible for collecting and presenting all written cooperative and related industry information to Medina’s members, employees, and the media.


  1. Promotes and represents a positive image for the Cooperative through timely and appropriate communication. Prepares, edits, and publishes publications and electronic media by the assigned deadline dates.  This includes a variety of media used for internal and external communication efforts aimed at various stakeholder groups.

    • Activities include planning and writing articles, developing graphics, performing page layout and design, editing materials, establishing mutually agreed on deadlines, proofreading and corrections, and ensuring high quality work for all communications. This includes, but is not limited to, the Texas Co-op Power magazine, e-newsletters, press releases, social media and any other special publications and communications.

    • Develops, orders, and distributes Cooperative print projects.

    • Updates internal and external website content; develops new elements to enhance/upgrade information.

    • Perform surveys as needed.

  2. Coordinates and participates in promotion of members programs, community involvement and engagement, and donation activities.

  3. Handles digital photography and video production work as assigned or requested.Organizes and maintains photo and video library.

  4. Responsible for message development and creative production for brand advertising and programs in line with the cooperative’s determined creative and media strategy. Coordinates and administers member programs as assigned.

  5. Serves as service bureau to all employees for publications, graphics, speech writing/editing, visual and oral presentation development, and presentations.

  6. Assists in developing department budget and goals.  Tracks all communications pending, ensures statements are correct, paid in a timely fashion, and assigned to the correct budget.

  7. Coordinates or assists in the planning and coordinating of cooperative meetings, including the annual membership meeting, nominating meetings and other meetings as needed.

  8. Coordinates members committees and acts as a liaison with committee members as needed.

  9. Assists with all news and radio media.

  10. Assist in selecting, ordering and dispersing of cooperative promotional materials.

  11. Attends seminars, in-house training, and other functions relevant to position. Travel may include overnight stays and traveling alone.

  12. Performs all duties in accordance with applicable safety, policy, and procedure manuals.

  13. Learns and applies the rules and regulations of the Cooperative including bylaws, tariff and the Substantive Rules of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

  14. Performs any other duties as assigned.


    Physical Demands and Working Conditions

    Works in a climate controlled office environment 90% of the time and outdoors 10% of the time to obtain photos and articles related to Cooperative’s publications.  Requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching.  Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers.  Requires ability to have good vision and hearing.  Occasionally requires driving a vehicle and traveling alone.  Must be able to lift and/or carry materials weighing up to 20 lbs. Attendance and punctuality is a work requirement.
