APPRENTICE 1 LINEMAN

Non-Exempt Status                                                                                                               

Reports To: Working Foreman or Journeyman Lineman

Supervises: No Supervisory Responsibilities

 

Requirements

Education:  Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:   Experience preferred but not required.

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Must have the physical strength and stamina to perform duties required including lifting and carrying heavy objects.
  • Must be able to meet the bucket capacity limits as indicated by the manufacturer, with climbing gear and other required equipment, at all times.
  • Ability to use a computer preferred but not required. 

Other Requirements: Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.

Typical Responsibilities Include

Assists lineman in the construction, replacement, and maintenance of electric distribution lines, structures, and equipment.  Operates vehicles and performs groundwork.  May collect delinquent bills. 

  1. Must complete required Apprentice program courses as prescribed under the program during a four-year training period.

  2. Must demonstrate job knowledge and skills in order to advance to next level through competency assessment and performance evaluation.

  3. In order to advance to an Apprentice 2, minimum requirements include:

    1. At least one year in an Apprentice 1 position,

    2. Obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license within 90 days and no more than two attempts,

    3. understand and gain knowledge of: basic voltages and electrical theory; voltage within their immediate service area and throughout MEC’s entire distribution system; basic work order procedures,

    4. Learn how to: frame and install poles, anchors and guy wires; accurately measure secondary voltages and amperages,

    5. Successfully complete the following: MEC Driver’s Road Test and Observation, MEC Digger Derrick Hand Signal Test, MEC Rigging Test,TEC Basic Pole Climbing School, TEC Digger Operator Training, Pole Top and Aerial Bucket Rescue, First Aid and CPR, Defensive Driving Training (as soon as available), and all other requirements listed in the evaluation of progression as an Apprentice 1.

    6. Complete 1,600 hours of On the Job Training along with 144 hours of related material

    7. Successfully pass Apprentice 1 test with an 80% or better on final test.

  4. Works on the ground and on de-energized lines only.

  5. Assists crew in installation of overhead and underground units.

  6. After obtaining a climbing certification, climbs poles; climbs into aerial device using controls to raise and lower bucket into the position for work to be performed.

  7. Gains knowledge of Cooperative’s service area and how to read a system map in order to perform job more efficiently and to qualify for advancement.

  8. Under the direction of their supervisor, maintains accurate accountability of outgoing and incoming materials in connection with assigned work.Maintains stock of materials on vehicles.

  9. Completes and maintains all required reports and paperwork both accurately and timely (installed/retired equipment, staking/inspection sheets, time sheets, etc.).

  10. Furnishes some required tools at time of employment and job specific tools after three-month introductory period; replacement cost shared by Cooperative.Assists in the proper use and care of all tools and equipment, and reports in writing to Supervisor(s) any equipment working improperly or in need of repair.

  11. As an Apprentice 1 Lineman, learns to perform all job duties in a safety-awareness manner and according to policies, procedures and regulatory guidelines MEC operates under.

  12. After three-month introductory employment period, wears required uniform with cost paid by MEC. Employee purchases initial pair of steel toed boots which must meet MEC’s requirements; replacement boot cost is subject to supervisor approval and policy guidelines. Employee wears additional personal protective equipment as required.

  13. Attends required safety meetings and seminars of which some may require extended overnight stays.

  14. Conduct must reflect a professional image when in contact with members, general public, and employees.

  15. Resides within 30 minutes from their respective office according to Cooperative policy.

  16. The Cooperative shall have 24-hour telephone access to any employee subject to “on-call” status.

  17. Performs other duties as assigned by management.

     

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  1. Works outdoors with considerable physical exertion, occasionally in poor weather conditions.Activities include frequent use of hand-eye coordination to operate power, hand tools and occasionally electronic equipment (weighing up to 20 lbs.).May be required to work in a dirty environment and around heavy equipment.

  2. Frequently lifts items that weigh up to 96 pounds.

  3. Frequently requires climbing heights up to 100 feet with belt, equipment, and tools weighing 40-50 lbs.Works off ladder, pole or in aerial device requiring the ability to perform work in awkward positions.

  4. Occasionally requires manual digging with tools when installing underground lines.

  5. Frequently requires clearing brush and trees with possible exposure to poison oak/ivy, insect bites/stings and unpredictable animals.

  6. Sufficient vision abilities required for this job include close, distant, color, peripheral and depth perception.

  7. Regularly drives a vehicle.

  8. Frequently requires availability to work stand-by and emergency conditions after completion of introductory employment period.

  9. Attendance and punctuality is a work requirement.
