Crane Mechanic Duties:

Crane Mechanics are responsible for repairing, maintaining and mobilization of crane equipment owned and rented by Hawkins Construction Company. Duties may include replacing defective parts, cleaning equipment, testing machinery, and overhauling cranes. Mechanics need the ability to diagnose problems by operating the machines or inspecting the equipment with the help of computerized testing tools, calibration appliances, and micrometers. They will be responsible for ordering parts, tracking crane maintenance and assisting with critical pick operations.

The Crane Mechanic performs routine maintenance procedures on all equipment, identifies complex problems, and reviews related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions primarily with cranes and other heavy equipment. Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Job site inspections to understand work procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Dismantles and reassembles machines as well as equipment. Using hoist, cranes, truck lifts, hand tools and power tools.
  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listen to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Troubleshoots and determines cause of failures that occur in all conventional cranes including electronic, hydraulic and mechanical failures. Troubleshoot and repair jib cranes, hoists and, overhead cranes.
  • Perform electrical installations.
  • May perform work on switchgears, motor relays, gearboxes and perform point to point wiring.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits to include a/c, d/c circuitry & radio controlled controllers.
  • Ability to perform basic arc welding for the purposes of repair.
  • Communicates with Equipment supervisor and other shop personnel as it relates to the job.
  • Responsible for keeping equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment as required.
  • Required to adhere and comply with state and federal law as well as Company policies and Safety and Environmental Regulations.
  • Repairs and lubricates machines, equipment and pumps.
  • Perform maintenance on the hydraulic pumps and filter systems.
  • Maintain, organize, control, inventory supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Clean and organize shop area. Maintain inventory of spare parts and material. Maintain tools and equipment for maintenance work.

Job Requirements:

  • A minimum 3 years of experience as a Crane Mechanic/Technician.
  • Have working knowledge of CANBUS, PAT, EKS, ECOS,LICCON systems.
  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges
  • Able to read and understand operating and parts manuals
  • Able to tests mechanical, electronic, electrical and hydraulic products and equipment after repair or modification to ensure proper operation and compliance with OEM specifications
  • Capable of accomplishing tasks independently without direct supervision
  • Maintain conformity to safety requirements and other regulations
  • Able to properly fill out working reports, timesheets and work orders
  • Able to work overtime as well as on weekends when necessary. 
  • Class "B" CDL, Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record required.

Successful Candidate will:

  • Be knowledgeable and understand OSHA, ANSI, CMAA and HMI codes and regulations that pertain to hoists and cranes.
  • Be responsible for any tools, vehicles or other equipment issued by Hawkins Construction Company
  • Be physically able to lift, climb ladders, maneuver around equipment and be comfortable with heights
  • Follow all rules, regulations and safety standards
  • Be able to pay attention to detail and have ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Have ability to work independently or with a team
  • Have high school diploma or equivalent; electrical mechanical education is considered a plus
