The Lead Product Design Engineer is responsible for direction and oversight of Engineering projects, resource management, and reviewing product design based on a diversified knowledge of engineering principles. This position is responsible for evaluating and approving design, specifications, and drawing releases. This position will be responsible for managing and directing department resources. This position also assumes the same technical and professional roles of a Senior Design Engineer. This position will receive general direction of key objectives to complete essential duties. 

Key Responsibilities


Leadership 35%

  • Understands functions and responsibilities of each employee assigned to the Production Supervisor position and manages them in all aspects of employment, including but not limited to: 
    • Hiring, Performance, Discipline, and Termination 
    • Training, Coaching, Mentoring, Guidance, and Motivation
  • Effectively manages employees and/or processes to ensure all responsibilities of assigned employees are met and that each external/internal customers' needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Ensures systems utilized by department (i.e. JDE, ADP, SolidWorks, etc.) meets or exceeds needs of all company employees.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors progress of short-term and long-term goals for all assigned employees.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates confidence when navigating difficult situations/conversations and advancing ideas.

Critical 25%

  • Directs and coordinates complete engineering projects by developing project objectives, developing project phases, assigning/managing resources, and maintaining the project schedule based on company objectives. Directs project with functional authority from plan to completion
  • Develops specifications based on technical information and customer requirements. Develops and reviews designs and specifications based on engineering principles, company standards, and customer specifications.
  • Serves as technical specialist and mentors for peers in at least one area, including but not limited to, hydraulics, FEAs, electronics, strengths of materials, mathematics, industry standards, and sensor application.
  • Effectively manages employees and/or processes to ensure all responsibilities of assigned employees are met and that each external/internal customers' needs are met in a timely manner.

Productivity / Job Knowledge 15%

  • Researches, analyzes data, and designs products from customer design specifications, custom sales orders, and other product specifications.
  • Acquires broad knowledge of company product designs and applications.
  • Applies sound analytical methods in the evaluation and application of mechanical components, materials, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical actuators, and sensors.
  • Applies extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering in broad areas of non-routine assignments which include working with multi-functional teams.
  • Performs engineering computations and analyses related to machine design, strengths of materials, hydraulic circuits, dynamics, heat transfer, power, etc.
  • Directs/leads additional areas/departments based on business and project needs.
  • Fosters all things related to continuous improvement. •Evaluates components and services of outside suppliers and makes decisions and/or recommendations regarding purchase and use.
  • Uses SolidWorks effectively as a design tool.
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions

Qualifications and Essential Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or agricultural engineering from an accredited engineering school required with a minimum of eight (8) years of product design experience in a manufacturing environment and with similar products.
  • Experience in best practices, project management, and people management.
  • High level of engineering technical skills and the ability to apply diversified knowledge to a design.
  • Experience evaluating, selecting, and applying sensors, electronics, and hydraulics to mechanical designs.
  • High level of solid modeling and documentation skills (SolidWorks preferred), FEA, FMEA, computers, and other engineering related tools
  • Strong Computer skills including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Oral and written communication skills appropriate for working with all levels of the company, customers, and suppliers.

The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet.  Employee may be exposed to shop environment while distributing documents to shop area.  When on shop floor, employee will be required to wear safety glasses at all times, steel-toed footwear and ear protection when job demands presence in areas outside safety zones and gloves when handling material. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration, and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the plant shop environment is moderately loud.  Position involves working indoors and outdoors with some exposure to weather conditions.
