About The Role

We are seeking a full-stack web developer to join our team.  This role will support critical areas of our website including our content pages, on-site audio player, donation page, member center, and organization information.  This role is integral to successfully serving our audience through a variety of platforms: our WBEZ website, our CPM website, our on-site digital audio technologies (streaming, podcasting, and on-demand audio players), and third-party platform integration (NPR properties, podcast players, and smart speakers).  Additionally, this role will help maintain and advance our back-end core applications including a custom content management system, third-party payment processing, CRM, identity management, and analytics/data management tools.

You’ll have the opportunity to influence decisions in areas spanning development and testing processes, release management, software/application selection, technical architecture, and sprint planning.  Candidates in this role will work closely with the members of the Product, Editorial, Fundraising, and Membership and Marketing teams and will work as part of a small and highly nimble team.  This position is based in Chicago.


  • Build and support consumer facing and internal custom sites, applications, and services for web and mobile
  • Create high quality, well designed, efficient and testable code in accordance with current industry standards
  • Implement, document, and follow structured and process-driven requirements, code management, and documentation routines
  • Establish unit testing, code review, and QA procedures and best practices
  • Gather specifications and product requirements from non-technical stakeholders with the support of a PM/Product Owner
  • Provide and refine estimates on epics, stories, and tasks in an agile/iterative way that allows proper reporting of velocity and delivery dates
  • Contribute to technology considerations, architecture, and product planning exercises
  • Monitoring website performance with special focus on site usability - identify ways to resolve inefficiencies and optimize application for speed and scalability
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as requested


  • BA or equivalent training and experience
  • Proficient to expert in object-oriented PHP - 3+ years experience required.
  • Expert in CSS and HTML - 3+ years experience required
  • Proficient to expert in Javascript - 3+ years experience required
  • Proficient to expert in responsive web development – 2+ years experience desired
  • Proficient in MySQL or MSSQL - 2+ years experience desired
  • Competent at working in advanced Javascript frameworks like React, Angular, NodeJS.
  • Competent at asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX
  • Familiarity with popular CMS (Drupal or Wordpress) is preferred
  • Direct experience building complex and highly interactive sites or applications.
  • Direct experience building decoupled applications.
  • Direct experience working with complex APIs.
  • Able to establish and be held accountable for reasonable delivery expectations.
  • Experience using process-driven approaches to code management, code coverage, and unit testing
  • Experience working with non-technical stakeholders to identify, prioritize, document, and clarify critical business requirements.
  • Able to manage time effectively, provide reasonable estimates, and identify opportunities to maximize efficiency.
