About the Job
Chicago Public Media, home to WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR news station, is looking for a versatile, experienced reporter to join its digital news team, one who can hit the ground running early in the day with limited direction and deliver a well-sourced, thoughtful, distinctive piece of enterprise reporting on a daily basis. We’re looking for a curious, aggressive and skillful writer who can distill the day’s hot topic in Chicago into high impact journalism – someone who is equally adept at both quick-turn breaking news articles and developing in-depth features.
This position falls within our digital news team and requires someone who is digitally-minded and smart in thinking about the story first through the lens of digital readers. This team player is responsible for writing daily stories for wbez.org at a pace that serves the daily habits of a loyal and engaged digital audience. This reporter will also provide smart news briefings and analysis for our radio/smart speaker newscasts from time to time.
While the position is general assignment, this reporter will also navigate Chicago’s business community and local economic issues, including jobs and development. We’re looking for a person who’s hungry to work close to the ground in order to develop sources inside and around Chicago’s metropolitan area.
The reporter should be able to drive or contribute to the big story of the day and work well with other reporters and editors around the newsroom. In addition, the position gives this reporter license to parachute in on breaking news, covering broader topics in order to serve the greater needs of the newsroom.
The ideal candidate is a resourceful journalist who can spot trends and make sharp connections with seemingly straightforward news stories, providing insight that gives our audience the context they need to have a deeper understanding of the news. We are looking for a reporter who has a keen eye for deep reporting that is distinctive from the competition and has a good nose for scoops.  A commitment to accuracy and excellence defines the work we do at WBEZ; as such, the successful candidate will have strong news judgment, writing and editing skills and work effectively under deadline.
  • Ability to write and produce stories at a daily pace on a wide range of topics with skill, accuracy and insight
  • Ability to handle breaking news under deadline pressure while balancing longer-term enterprise projects
  • Demonstrated passion for news and a delight in unearthing scoops, advancing stories, or identifying creative angles when covering key stories in Chicago’s daily news cycle
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with editors, producers and reporters across the newsroom in service of shared excellence
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to cultivate strong relationships with colleagues and sources.
  • Experience with new forms of storytelling powered by the social web and built for mobile web consumption a plus
  • Comfortable with using social media to drive engagement and promote content
  • Knowledge of the Chicago area business and economic landscape is a plus
