WBEZ’s sister service, Vocalo Radio (91.1 FM, vocalo.org), targets a multicultural audience through an urban alternative format.

About the Job
Chicago Public Media, the parent organization of WBEZ 91.5 FM, seeks a Senior Producer, Podcasts to play a key role in creating and developing exciting,  innovative, and diverse next-generation on-demand audio content and podcasts.   
 
We are looking for a Senior Producer, Podcasts who has a passion for creative collaboration, first rate editorial chops and considerable experience developing and producing audio stories.  In particular, we’re looking for someone who has extensive experience in long-form, multi-part storytelling and is highly skilled in developing and producing stories with complex narrative structures. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who believes in the power of audio to connect, inspire, and transform.   
 
Creativity is key and the best candidate will bring compelling ideas to the table, and will take joy in shaping ideas with others.   The best candidate will possess an appetite for adventure and fun -- and the courage to try things that might not work out. They will have significant experience working across a wide array of production styles, formats and story-types, providing the production inspiration necessary to initiate new concepts, while helping hosts and other producers do their best work. They will have strong journalistic skills and ethical sensibilities, and they will have the ability to give clear, constructive guidance to less experienced members of the production team.   
 
The right Senior Producer will work alongside the managing team to build effective creative relationships both inside and outside our organization,  identifying opportunities for new, unexpected and sustainable programming. They will also be great time managers, and will be able to consistently hit deadlines. The ideal candidate will love working closely with other producers on the team, supporting and advising those who are less experienced by nourishing talent and empowering it to grow.  They will also work closely and productively with diverse stakeholders in marketing, development, digital, legal, and corporate underwriting, all in an effort to ensure our work has maximum impact.
 
Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Conceptualize and build podcast programs at the highest level, on deadline. 
  • Be an active member of the content development team.  Help plan, shape and edit WBEZ’s podcast output from conception to distribution.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization, to maintain the highest editorial standards and successful distribution. 
  • Support less experienced colleagues both editorially and creatively as they develop and build a wide variety of podcasts.
  • Support and enhance audience development strategies to ensure the success of our podcasts.
  • Work strategically alongside the Managing Director Content Development to build relationships and partnerships both within and beyond the organization, which can develop into new shows and opportunities. 
  • Challenge, nourish and empower those you work with, furthering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and continued editorial and creative excellence.
Skills and Experience We are Looking For:
  • Outstanding production skills, with a proven and demonstrable track record in complex audio production, preferably in the podcast space. 
  • Experience of working alongside less experienced producers to create work of tremendous distinction.
  • Ability to work in an editorially collaborative way – to articulate your own ideas precisely and concisely, and to recognize and build on strong ideas that come from others. 
  • Skilled at juggling a variety of daily tasks, with demonstrated expertise in effective project management 
  • Excellent writing, editing, communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking abilities and demonstrated success in managing multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to identify top talent, build and nurture relationships with internal and external partners
  • Knowledge of current trends in on-demand content and podcasting, including creative trends, audience development, corporate sponsorship, IP, and distribution platforms.
  • Thoughtful, resourceful, creative, energetic, collegial, flexible and calm under pressure. 
  • Passion and enthusiasm for podcasting and the opportunities it offers for inspiring and original program making.
  • Knowledge of the Chicago region’s rich diversity of stories, sectors and communities is helpful.
