About the Job
WBEZ seeks an outstanding News Host to guide listeners through a dynamic mix of daily news, interviews, and continuity to create Morning Edition for Chicago.  Morning Edition sets the pace of the daily news conversation – who and what to pay attention to, and what’s at stake.  On the radio and on Smart Speakers, our Anchor/Host is a trusted morning companion helping Chicagoans make sense of the news, and understand what happened while they we’re sleeping as they get ready for their day.

We’re looking for a News Host to create a morning listening experience that’s dynamic, companionable, and curious about the why of a story.  The best candidate will know how to make an audience feel welcome, guide them through a busy morning, and ask direct questions on their behalf, they will do all that behind the mic, at live events, and actively on social media.

Ideally, you’re steeped in Chicago news and the issues and people at the heart of America’s third largest city - or naturally curious about the Midwest.  You must be able to converse and conduct interviews on a wide range of topics, from politics, science and business, to arts and culture. The ideal candidate will have a thirst for knowledge, an insatiable curiosity, and delight in discovery.  You can wake up in the dark, work with a team, and always hit a post. You’re expected to dig in, look for fresh angles on stories and ideas, and keep the morning moving.  A great on-air laugh is a plus, as is the maturity and confidence to bring your full self to each conversation and break during this newscast.

You will work collaboratively with the Program Director, show producers, and editors, and the Managing Editor of News to craft a lively, informative and interactive daily program. You will be comfortable using prep from the production team to prepare daily newscasts, interviews and continuity, and being active on social media.

Side by side with the WBEZ newsroom, you will help set the tone for Morning Edition in Chicago, fostering an ambitious, supportive and collaborative dynamic on-air and off. You should be driven to deliver the best audio experience for our listeners and thrive in a team environment.

Responsibilities
  • Anchoring regular newscasts from 5a to 10a each weekday morning
  • Presenting on-air content including news, weather, time checks, traffic and credits

  • Fill-in for other anchor shifts as needed (weekends or afternoon drive time)
  • Mentoring and training back-up hosts
  • Participate in on-air fundraising, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
We expect the Anchor/host to be an outstanding multi-tasker, calm in the midst of deadlines and breaking deadlines, a reliable presence behind the mic and in the newsroom, and bring a sense of humor to their work with colleagues and on the air.

Skills and experience we are looking for:
  • Professional on-air presentation and demonstrated talent at live anchoring
  • Excellent writing, copy editing and communication skills
  • 5+ years of journalism experience in a broadcast or digital newsroom environment
  • Must be able to operate a board
  • Digital audio editing skills using Sony Vegas, Pro Tools or Adobe Audition
  • Strong social media skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to track developing stories and an eye on how stories could play out across the day
  • Proven story generation and interviewing skills required
  • Knowledge of Chicago and Illinois issues is a huge plus. Anchors are expected to be informed in a wide range of topics beyond current events, including arts, culture, film, history, science and public policy
To be considered, ALL candidates MUST include links to Audio Clips.  Do so by providing links (Soundcloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) in an attachment during the on-line application process.

Your ideal demo should contain several clips that are:
