We launched innovative, iconic shows such as This American Life, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me…, Nerdette, Making Obama and the ground-breaking podcast Serial. Chicago Public Media engages listeners and users across broadcast radio, digital audio streams, websites, and mobile apps. Our flagship station, WBEZ Chicago (91.5 FM and wbez.org) is Chicago’s premier hub for trusted, fact-based journalism, entertaining audio programs, and podcasts. WBEZ’s sister service, Vocalo (91.1 FM in Chicago, vocalo.org everywhere), targets a multicultural audience through an urban alternative music and culture format.


The Opportunity: Intern – Podcast Audio team

As a Podcast Audio Intern at Chicago Public Media, you’ll work closely with producers who make some of the best podcasts out there. We have two (2) opportunities available. You’ll learn skills that great audio producers need, including researching, fact-checking, guest booking, prepping for interviews, cutting tape, mixing, group editing, and engaging audiences on social media. Ideal candidates are passionate about audio storytelling, narrative journalism, and podcasts. They’re also eager to dig deep into projects. They take risks, and they learn fast. 


To apply you need:

  • Excitement to learn about audio as a storytelling medium
  • Demonstrated experience in journalism, multimedia production, audio production, or writing in a previous internship, class work, supervised community work, or employment
  • Experience with audio editing software (e.g., ProTools or Adobe Audition) is a plus but not required 


About the Podcast Team

Chicago Public Media’s podcast team has produced award-winning podcasts such as Making Oprah, Making Obama, The Trouble, Nerdette, 16 Shots, Public Official A, Motive, Curious City, South Side Stories and more. Our podcasts range from weekly interview shows to investigative and narrative-driven journalism.


We are located at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois. Due to COVID restrictions, interns must be able to work remotely at their own designated location with internet access; they also must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier studios. 

Chicago Public Media interns gain hands-on experience while working alongside some of the best talent in the business. Our hope is that — after receiving a solid foundation at WBEZ — our interns continue to contribute to this industry.  


A bit about our internship programs:

  • Many, but not all, of our interns have completed college or some other form of education and/or certification in the journalism or media field(s).
  • Many go on to careers in public media or other outlets. Many have found their way back to WBEZ, too.
  • We pay $14/hour, non-negotiable.
  • Scheduled work weeks are up to 24 hours/week.
  • We offer some flexibility on scheduling; most are daytime work hours and on a Monday through Friday schedule
  • Internships last approximately 6 months, running January 2021 through June 2021
  • Because these are part-time roles, they are not eligible for benefits.
  • We are accepting applications through Oct. 12, 2020.
