Chicago Public Media is one of the largest and most respected public media organizations in the country. We launched innovative, iconic shows such as This American Life, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me…, Nerdette, Making Obama and the ground-breaking podcast Serial. Chicago Public Media engages listeners and users across broadcast radio, digital audio streams, websites, and mobile apps. Our flagship station, WBEZ Chicago (91.5 FM and wbez.org) is Chicago’s premier hub for trusted, fact-based journalism, entertaining audio programs, and podcasts. WBEZ’s sister service, Vocalo (91.1 FM in Chicago, vocalo.org everywhere), targets a multicultural audience through an urban alternative music and culture format.

 

The Opportunity: Intern – Multi-media podcast team

This internship is with our Curious City team.  Curious City is a people-powered weekly podcast, radio segment and digital project that answers questions the public asks about Chicago, the region and the people who live here. We are looking for a multimedia/engagement intern who has a zeal for telling stories and creating connections with the entire Chicago community.

 

With mentoring from the team’s multimedia producer and editors, our interns research stories, create story graphics and other audio and visual digital elements, and maintain strong relationships with the public through social media and other creative forms of engagement. They also develop career-building skills in conceiving, critiquing and editing the weekly podcast as well as creating multimedia stories. By the end of their term, interns will have produced a digital feature they can use for their portfolio. 

 

To apply you need:  

  • A desire to learn more about the Chicago region’s history 
  • A desire to experiment with digital storytelling and audience engagement
  • Excitement to learn about audio and digital storytelling 
  • Comfort in using social media tools (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Demonstrated journalism, multimedia, writing, or audio production experience in a previous internship, class work, supervised community work, or employment

 

We are located at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois. Due to COVID restrictions, interns must be able to work remotely at their own designated location with internet access; they also must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier studios. 

Chicago Public Media interns gain hands-on experience while working alongside some of the best talent in the business. Our hope is that — after receiving a solid foundation at WBEZ — our interns continue to contribute to this industry.  

 

A bit about our internship programs:

  • Many, but not all, of our interns have completed college or some other form of education and/or certification in the journalism or media field(s).
  • Many go on to careers in public media or other outlets. Many have found their way back to WBEZ, too.
  • We pay $14/hour, non-negotiable.
  • Scheduled work weeks are up to 24 hours/week.
  • We offer some flexibility on scheduling; most are daytime work hours and on a Monday through Friday schedule
  • Internships last approximately 6 months, running January 2021 through June 2021
  • Because these are part-time roles, they are not eligible for benefits.
  • We are accepting applications through Oct. 12, 2020.

  • Specific skills you want to learn during the internship 
  • If applicable, any links to a portfolio of writing samples; audio, video, or multimedia packages; or other completed work that may be relevant to this opening
