The Opportunity: Data Reporter

As a Data Reporter, you will join a diverse team of editors, reporters, and producers responsible for WBEZ’s digital news content delivered via the web, social media, and daily newsletter. You will also become a vital part of WBEZ’s editorial content strategy, contributing to its daily, enterprise, and investigative coverage.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Pitch, report, and write data-driven stories, including visualizations, for wbez.org and other digital platforms 
  • Plan proactively and identify data and graphics opportunities across the newsroom
  • Partner with other reporters, editors, and digital producers to brainstorm visual/data coverage ideas and find gaps in current story planning
  • Review data, analyses, stories, visualizations, and graphics to ensure adherence to journalistic standards
  • Using Google Analytics, monitor the web performance of stories and analyze for future improvements

Additional Duties 

  • Occasionally edit and/or execute data visuals for daily, long-form, and breaking news, including maps, charts, and graphics
  • Participate in cross-departmental product development work groups and content brainstorming sessions 
  • Work occasional weekends and holidays as part of newsroom rotation

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
  • 3+ years of digital journalism experience in a deadline driven environment
  • Advanced proficiency with Python, node.js, JavaScript, Knight Lab storytelling tools, Flourish, Google Data Studios, Datawrapper, CSS, Excel, and other data analysis and visualization tools 
  • Familiarity with modern mapping tools (Arc, QGIS, MapBox, Maps4News, etc.)
  • Excellent organization, planning and communication skills 
  • Familiarity with journalistic standards and AP style
  • Ability to produce high quality work in a collaborative environment
  • Proficiency with Content Management Systems (CMS) and digital media production
  • Ability to stay focused while working to quickly meet multiple deadlines

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access, and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
