Job Description: Director of Sustainability

Bloom Energy, a solid oxide fuel cell company, is looking for a Director of Sustainability to join its world class marketing team.  This position will have responsibility for creating and leading the Bloom Energy Sustainability function both internally and externally. This will include supporting our marketing, business development and sales success; leading customer discussions on sustainability; supporting customers in carbon accounting and sustainability reporting for Bloom products and projects; leading Bloom’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting; and engaging with the sustainability community and policy makers on key energy and environmental issues. The right candidate should be a good communicator and a subject matter expert who can effectively interface with senior management, customers, policy makers and industry organizations. He/she will be well organized, a team player, and able to effectively manage the demands of multiple simultaneous projects. He/she will be a senior member of the Bloom marketing department, reporting to the VP of Global Business Development and Policy. This position is based in Sunnyvale, CA.

Role and Responsibilities:

Sales Support/Customer Engagement (pre-sale)

  • Subject Matter Expert in support of sales engagements with customers regarding how Bloom installations support the customer’s overall carbon reduction and sustainability goals, measurements and reporting
  • Subject matter expert in support of customer sales engagements to address environmental questions including permits and compliance that might be included in the sale of the BE system.
  • Develop and manage marketing materials on Bloom’s sustainability benefits including emissions reductions and water-use reductions
  • Support customers’ sustainability reporting efforts

Policy Advocacy/Carbon Measurement and Accounting Rules

  • Deep expertise and credibility on carbon accounting methodologies and reporting
  • Engage in stakeholder working groups on carbon accounting standards and coordinate with the distributed generation industry to facilitate broader engagement
  • Develop and execute a plan to address the existing rules and/or create different rules that will help us win when encountering sustainability objection from customers.
  • Subject matter expert with policy makers at the federal, state and local level (Clean vs Renewable)

Alliances and Leadership with Environmental Organizations & Thought Leadership

  • Develop and manage relationships within the sustainability and environmental community and lead Bloom’s engagement on key policy issues
  • Proactively develop relationships with local, state and federal Environmental regulatory authorities to improve understanding of Bloom systems and benefits.
  • Represent Bloom at conferences and other targeted thought leadership events

Corporate Sustainability Measurement and Reporting

  • Develop and manage Corporate Sustainability Reporting process that establishes and maintains metrics and targets used to measure and communicate Bloom Energy’s corporate sustainability performance.
  • Cradle to grave environmental audit of Bloom’s product (including supply chain, recycling, energy intensity, etc) and then use the results of the audit to further highlight Bloom’s green credentials externally

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 15+ years professional experience, including directly relevant sustainability and carbon accounting experience
  • Has served in a significant leadership role as a sustainability leader at a Fortune 500 company or large organization
  • Fluency in carbon accounting and corporate sustainability reporting
  • Experience working with standard-setting organizations including WRI, CDP and WBCSD to help define appropriate measurement and reporting protocols 
  • Experience in coalition building with other environmental organizations and local authorities
  • Strong advocate and effective communicator
  • Experience with board level corporate sustainability reporting
  • Demonstrated cross-functional leadership and program management skills
  • Strong analytical, critical and creative thinker
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills
  • Collaborative and team-oriented
  • Self-motivated and highly organized, thrives in a dynamic environment
  • Able to grow and adapt as Bloom Energy grows
  • Experience in customer facing roles
  • Graduate degree preferred
