Location: This position will be based in either Sunnyvale, CA or Newark, DE


Role and Responsibilities:

This role is focused on the safety of adapting Natural Gas Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) to Hydrogen fuel source in order to create a non-greenhouse gas producing source of electrical power generation.

  • Lead creation of System level DFMEA to evaluate potential safety and reliability risks related to hydrogen fueled SOFCs.

  • Work with product development teams to define and execute risk mitigation actions to address risks identified in the FMEA.

  • Develop hydrogen safety system strategy to proactively address potential risks for hydrogen fueled SOFCs.

  • Develop and oversee hydrogen safety test plans to verify safety system perform as expected to maintain redundant safeguards against safety incidents when subjected to a multitude of fault injection cases.

  • Assure readiness of system from a safety and reliability standpoint before deployment to customer Beta evaluation site.

  • Serve as reliability and safety team representative for product development programs to assure proper steps are identified and completed before release for production.

  • Work with service and install teams to develop safety practices and procedures for site designs and field service practices.

  • Monitor and evaluate system performance for Beta test systems operating at customer sites.

  • Work with Product Development, Site design, install and field service teams to develop processes to more effectively assure successful performance to customer expectations.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experienced Engineer with specific focus on hydrogen systems safety and reliability.

  • BS or MS in Engineering with minimum 6+ years of relevant experience

  • Strong safety engineering background and skills:

    • Extensive skills with FMEA and or hazards analysis, risk analysis and risk management.

    • Experience working with UL and other US and international safety agencies for approval of products.

    • Expert knowledge of NPFA 2 - Hydrogen Technologies Code for safeguards for the generation, installation, storage, piping, use and handling of hydrogen in compressed gas form.

  • System testing experience including safety systems testing and verification

  • Strong product development experience following NPI or phase-gate development processes.

  • Preferred knowledge of fuel cell systems and preferably Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs)

  • Preferred experience with IEC 62282-3-100:2019 – Fuel Cell Technologies – Part 3 Stationary fuel cell power systems - Safety

  • Strong PC and data analysis skills.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including executive presentations.

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams in the solution of complex issues.
