Description

Chemonics International's West and Central Africa and Haiti (WCAFH) region is seeking a New Business Manager. WCAFH’s upcoming new business portfolio includes opportunities in finance mobilization, resilience, governance, WASH, agricultural value chains, market systems, conservation, and economic growth spanning Nigeria, Niger, the Republic of Congo, Haiti, DRC, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, and Mali. Successful candidates will have a strong background in business development, experience in project management, and a proven record of versatility, leadership, and integrity. The candidate should have the ability to build and maintain respectful relationships with partners and people – including a commitment to the professional development of staff.
 
Roles and Responsibilities:
Project Management
  • Develops effective working relationships with clients, counterparts and stakeholders and continually promotes outstanding client service with both home office and field office staff.
  • Plans and directs home office new business activities for assigned region and participates, as needed, on corporate new business task forces with special emphasis on strategy and proposal team development.
  • Establishes and nurtures collaborative relationships with potential partners, subcontractors, technical specialists, and donor agencies. 
  • Supervises, develops, and evaluates assigned team(s) and supervises managers, associates, and sometimes other directors. Ensures staff receives regular constructive performance feedback, prompt resolution of problems, and time and opportunity to grow and develop in key competency areas.
  • In collaboration with SVP and director of new business development, develops and supervises implementation of proposal strategies to optimize profitability and win rate.
  • Maybe receive delegated authority to serve as salary negotiator or lead a negotiation team for candidates proposed on bids and for home office new business positions.
  • Serves as acting new business director as necessary.
  • May serve key leadership roles on proposal efforts ensuring that Chemonics best practices and quality standards are employed during proposal preparation and submission. 
Technical
  • Demonstrates technical competence in work products, reviews and provides comment on new business development including technical input to proposal sections and documentation.
  • Expands knowledge in primary discipline, demonstrates understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of international development, and begins applying understanding to problem solving, new business development, strategy and programming decisions.
  • Maintains and expands professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies and Chemonics practice networks.
  • Speaks and writes knowledgeably concerning the economic, political, social, and cultural environment of assigned development assistance projects.
New Business Development
  • Identifies and develops new business leads, articulating well about international development assistance programs and trends and Chemonics’ role therein, and begins to expand knowledge beyond assigned region or primary technical area.
  • Promotes Chemonics by attending external events, networking with clients and counterparts, articulating a solid understanding of Chemonics’ past and present portfolio, and effectively representing the company’s history, values, and standards.
  • Assumes increasingly complex new business roles per level II competencies, including conducting supervised G-trips, coordinating proposal teams, conceptualizing and writing the management plan, and/or personnel or corporate capability sections.  
  • Applies knowledge of NICRA rates to provide early estimates of proposal profitability, prepares cost proposals independently and in compliance with Chemonics’ standards, defends cost proposal in cost reviews, and mentors others in such tasks.
Management and Leadership
  • Attracts, recruits, and recommends hiring of new staff  who fit the profile of the Chemonics professional. Trains and mentors staff on Chemonics management tools and systems.
  • Delegates, supervises, and evaluates performance of assigned staff. Sets professional development goals for oneself and those supervised, provides regular, constructive performance feedback, and takes prompt action to resolve performance issues.
  • Provides organizational, planning, and management support to outside facilitators and undergoes training to serve as in-house facilitator for meetings.
  • Defines team roles and responsibilities clearly and concisely, learns and promotes strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development, and cultivates collaborative working relationships across the company.
  • Demonstrates leadership, versatility and integrity.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant new business, project management and staff supervisory experience.
  • Experience living or working in developing countries.
  • Knowledge of company's main clients and their requirements.
  • Understanding and fluency in administrative, accounting and management systems and demonstrated ability to mentor staff in these areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and write proposal or report sections of ten pages in length.
  • Demonstrated skills in playing a pivotal role on a project management team for one or two projects, undertaking complex technical and new business assignments, and conducting assignments and managing special projects as required.
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad a minimum of 4-8 weeks per year; experience living or working in developing countries.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates leadership, versatility, and integrity.
  • French proficiency preferred
