Technical Writer

The Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) is in the midst of great transformation and innovation. To support its ongoing enterprise-wide technology modernization and change effort, IMRF is seeking a Technical Writer to serve as primary writer for the re-imagining of IMRF’s system-generated, benefits communication, primarily business letters sent to customers, forms to facilitate business transactions, and process-related, benefits-related content within IMRF’s secure websites. The Technical Writer will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by helping create a modernized suite of communication materials that will support IMRF members and employers long into the future.

The selected candidate must be a skilled technical writer with the ability to transform complex business processes and steps into easily understood information that helps members and employers make good decisions in their interactions with IMRF. The candidate must be able to understand the capabilities of IMRF’s business systems and the resulting business processes, and produce material that adheres to any constraints. The individual must be an effective communicator, capable of collaborating well with employees at all levels of the organization. The candidate must thrive at leading cross-functional teams executing communications projects. Preference will be given to candidates who have previous experience creating content associated with large-scale technology implementations.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary writer for multi-year initiative to modernize IMRF’s suite of system-generated business correspondence and customer forms, in coordination with an enterprise-wide technology replacement project.

  • Serve as primary writer for process-related benefits content featured on IMRF’s various public and secure websites. Adapt content to new business processes resulting from the technology-replacement project.

  • Serve as primary writer for process-related benefits content featured within IMRF’s suite of print booklets. Adapt content to new business processes resulting from the technology-replacement project.

  • Seek opportunities to align and make consistent process-related benefits content across all online and print platforms.

  • Collaborate with internal customers, both with business units and with technology partners, to create and maintain process-related benefits content.

  • Assist with the ongoing maintenance of process-related benefits content stored within IMRF’s Content Management System, and delivered via IMRF’s public website and employee Intranet.

    Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. A degree in technical writing, communications, journalism, or related field strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of two years technical writing experience.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. Knowledge of plain language principles strongly preferred.

  • Technical knowledge sufficient to understand basic html, programming logic concepts, writing for IF/THEN scenarios, how system design impacts correspondence writing, and the UAT process.

  • An effective communicator, capable of collaborating well with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office; in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word strongly preferred.

  • Ability to produce content and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

  • Experience developing content associated with large-scale technology implementations strongly preferred.

  • Self-starter able to work independently with minimal guidance.

  • Ability to think critically and solve problems.
