Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer (ME) will assume the role of the team’s expert in mechanical engineering with full responsibility for the design, development and integration of unique laser-based biomedical diagnostic sensing systems. The ME will be working with a team of scientists and other multidisciplinary engineers and will be directly responsible for carrying on the conceptual design, product development, engineering design, procurement and vendors’ interaction, prototyping and packaging of; optical, ultrasound and photonics subassemblies, placement devices, adaptors, device casing, and test fixtures.  In addition, the ME will be engaged in all forms and stages of development including parts fabrication, testing, data gathering and analysis, validation of performance of components, subassemblies and system. The ME will generate and support documentation of all designs, bill of materials, test and inspection procedures and reports, QA/QC/RA requirements, data, and any conceived intellectual property activities related to the sensing system.  The ME will support the transition of validated models into manufacturing phase and will assist in the procurement of all the parts and services needed to complete the different assigned tasks.  The position assumes broad cross-functional skills in related engineering fields. The position has a forward looking research and development aspect, to learn, adapt and incorporate new techniques into our medical diagnostic product lines.  The position offers rich opportunities for career development as a leader in clinical translation of new technologies.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Advanced degree in mechanical engineering or related disciplines with > 5 years of hands-on industrial experience.  Will consider Bachelors of Science degree with > 7 years related experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in designing experimental fixtures and setups to integrate optical fibers, miniaturized ultrasound and electrical components to support the fabrication of reliable prototypes for proof-of-concept, engineering models to products.
  • Proven track record of having a balanced abilities between analytical and experimental design
  • In-depth experience and knowledge of key properties of broad family of materials (polymers, metals, glass, bonding compounds) and their behavior under different conditions and processing techniques.
  • Experience with handling precision machine shop gear, fabrication and inspection tools and processes.
  • Skilled in setting up a system and compiling full documentation of all designs, bill of materials, specs, test procedures, test data, and generate accurate engineering drawings utilizing 3D CAD software.
  • Proven track record in handling the procurement of desired parts from different vendors and services.
  • Knowledge of FDA Design Controls, QSR and GMP requirements, and ISO 9000 compliance.
  • Experience in packaging durable and ergonomically designed miniaturized. electrical/mechanical/optical parts leading to robust sensors for the medical device applications
  • Ability to function efficiently as an individual contributor and a team member in a cross-functional team of different specialties and seniority levels and vendors.
  • Experience in the medical device industry, preferably in laser-based medical products.
  • Fluent with standard and specialized computing, processing gear (hardware and software) and lab test equipment.
  • Ability and experience in maintaining mutual understanding of product design needs, regulatory, and production requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to follow given instructions and be open to learn new approaches to improve and update related skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to communicate clearly & effectively across the team members, vendors and administrators.
  • Ability to clearly present (verbally, in writing) and discuss all conceived technical concepts, designs, test methodology, test results findings, data analysis and suggestions of improvements that may lead to securing company’s intellectual property.

Physical requirements/Work Environment:

 

This position primarily works in a laboratory and an office environment. It requires frequent sitting, standing and walking.  Daily use of a computer and other computing and digital devices is required.  May stand for extended periods when facilitating meetings or walking in the facilities.  Some travel may be necessary, so the ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid Driver’s license and passport is required. Some international travel is necessary.
