As an Associate Portfolio Manager, you take responsibility for the outcomes of your portfolios and for their commercial success. Associate Portfolio Managers take a medium to long term view, recognizing that both the ride and the ultimate outcome matter to clients. 

Associate Portfolio Managers at Thornburg act as a dedicated resource to support one or more strategies at the firm.  This support includes analyzing securities for possible inclusion into strategies, portfolio construction and risk management, and distribution and marketing support.  Associate Portfolio Managers will support the Portfolio Manager in all regards and should be a credible stand-in for Portfolio Managers in all functions of the Portfolio Manager role over time.  Associate Portfolio Managers will support investment decisions through ongoing monitoring of information which may impact the value of investments and communication of key insights related to those investments. They guide the strategy’s interactions with centralized research and act as a mentor for more junior team members. While Associate Portfolio Managers may gravitate toward a certain style of investing or product focus, they should have a solid understanding of many styles and seek to overcome their own biases to provide idiosyncratic alpha and the outcomes each portfolio represents. 


  • Analyze equity securities for investment purposes. Synthesize data from many sources including company filings, interviews, financial models, trade shows, conferences, etc.
  • Generate actionable and insightful investment recommendations based on independent research and primary due diligence. 
  • Monitor individual investments. Interpret developments that may impact performance on a longer-term basis such as economic news and company-specific developments.
  • Serve in a global generalist capacity, whereby responsibilities span geographies and industries.  Candidates will be expected to improve understanding of international markets over time.
  • Present recommendations to the lead portfolio manager regarding both specific investments and broader portfolio considerations.
  • Collaborate with other colleagues on the team and at the firm to share investment insights.
  • Contribute high conviction ideas to portfolio decision-making within the team’s disciplined investment process to make a positive investment impact
  • Although this position is a multi-industry and global generalist role, the successful candidate should possess knowledge of a variety of relevant sectors including, but not limited to: information technology, communication services, consumer discretionary and health care.
  • The successful candidate will source opportunities globally, lead investment research, and provide input and insight into the portfolio construction process.
  • Responsible for both understanding a company’s relative valuation and maintaining comprehensive knowledge of a company and the industry in which it operates. The Associate Portfolio Manager should command a fundamental grasp of the investment opportunity blending both qualitative due diligence and quantitative skills. The Associate Portfolio Manager must be able to parse signal from noise.
  • Work within a collaborative team environment to seek out great businesses selling at attractive prices, helping to contribute to a concentrated portfolio that is differentiated from other international offerings.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and produce, as appropriate, written communications and updates on companies in the portfolio or for consideration in the portfolio
  • Communicate and partner with sales and marketing to articulate investment process and performance
  • Based in Santa Fe, NM, with regular travel


  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • MBA or similar advanced degree and/or CFA is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in financial markets as an equity research analyst / associate portfolio manager at an institutional investment firm with a strong pedigree
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in-depth, effective fundamental investment research required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (Research and writing samples will be required).
  • Genuine passion for global equity markets and strong work ethic required.
  • Bilingual and international experience a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and abroad as needed.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Bloomberg
  • FINRA Series 7 and 63 preferred, or must be obtained within 1 year of hire
