Job Title: Director of Mechanical and Systems Engineering

Reports to: VP of Engineering, Product Development

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

As the Director of Mechanical & Systems Engineering within Paramit’s Product Development Group, you will lead a team of Mechanical Engineers, Consumables Engineers, Systems Engineers and Product Development Engineers responsible for the design and development of life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices, as well as their associated consumables/cartridges. The Mechanical Engineering Group owns several critical aspects of every project such as mechatronics, fluidics, disposable cartridges, pneumatics, thermal control, chassis and enclosures. 

As a product development firm, our primary focus is to help our clients develop and commercialize cutting edge technology and products. Our clients range from young start-ups to well-established companies. Projects are typically fast-paced, technically diverse and rely on a close-knit, interdisciplinary team comprised of a Technical Project Manager, Systems Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Optical Engineers, Software/Firmware Engineers, Consumables Engineers, Industrial Designers and Product Development Engineers. These teams work with Paramit’s world class manufacturing group to seamlessly transition our client’s products into manufacturing using our transfer-less process, which results in reduced time-to-market and fewer issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the design and development of mechanical systems and sub-systems for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices
    • Analyze existing product requirements and specifications. Generate additional requirements and specifications, as needed
    • Lead or participate in all concept and architecture development activities as well as design reviews
    • Ensure that all requirements and specifications are being met and that all systems, sub-systems and components are being designed or selected for reliability, manufacturability and serviceability
  • Supervise a group of mechanical, systems, consumables, product development and test engineers
    • Provide technical mentorship and oversight on all architecture and concept development efforts, designs and testing
    • Provide career development advice and help set and achieve individual goals
    • Prepare performance reviews and help resolve conflicts when they arise
  • Oversee the allocation of resources across multiple projects and phases within a given project
  • Manage both customer and internal projects, when needed
  • Serve as an advisor to project managers, clients and to the internal and external technical team members
  • Serve as an individual contributor to projects, as needed, by defining system architecture, developing concepts, creating CAD models and drawings, building breadboards and prototypes, creating test plans, writing test protocols and driving systems integration efforts
  • Facilitate regular engagements with our manufacturing engineers and supply chain team, at all stages of development
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring and onboarding strategies and processes
  • Help build, develop and nurture a world-class technical product development team
  • Assist in customer acquisition efforts, including proposal creation
  • Lead or assist in improvements to processes, laboratories and facilities, including the expansion of capabilities and the addition of new tools and equipment
  • Help establish long term vision and direction for the group and organization
  • Provide regular project status reports to the VP of Engineering, CFO and CEO

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be:

  • A technical leader in the engineering and development of life science instrumentation or diagnostic equipment
  • Extremely hands on, as an individual contributor, whether it be defining system architecture, developing concepts, creating CAD models and drawings, building breadboards and prototypes or documenting test protocols
  • Capable of managing internal or customer projects when needed, as a technical project manager
  • Capable of providing oversight and guidance to concept and architecture development as well as on detailed design, risk mitigation, systems integration and test plan/protocol development
  • Experienced and successful technical and people managers, in areas including, but not limited to:
    • Technical mentorship/oversight on all concept development, designs, testing, etc.
    • Career development, goal setting, performance reviews and conflict resolution
  • Customer focused, collaborative and business savvy

Must have

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering with a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience in life science instrumentation or diagnostic/medical device development. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are highly preferred. Candidates with exceptional aptitude and experience from other fields or disciplines will also be considered
  • Contributed significantly to the design and development of at least three major life science instruments or diagnostic devices, from feasibility through manufacturing
  • A high degree of energy, motivation, creativity, and resourcefulness to help solve challenging problems and develop cutting-edge products
  • A solid understanding of biology, chemistry, physics and engineering fundamentals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated success leading and working in multidisciplinary team environments
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and 2D drawings
  • Proficiency in the design of machined parts, sheet metal parts, frames and other assemblies, injection molded parts and complex plastic consumables, cast parts and weldments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint
  • Understanding of basic design control under ISO 9001 and ISO 13485
  • Knowledge of GD&T and have experience performing tolerance stack analyses
  • Understanding of the properties, chemical compatibility and appropriate uses of a variety of different metals, alloys, ceramics, elastomers and plastics
  • Understanding of a variety of manufacturing, processing and finishing methods
  • Proficiency with rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC milling machines
  • Proficiency with shop tools such as drill presses, lathes and band/table/miter/jig saws
  • Proficiency with all common test and measurement equipment

Must have demonstrated proficiency in at least four of the following areas, in the context of life science/biotech/biomedical device development:

  • Design and integration of mechanisms such as drawers, lids, clamps and grippers that utilize linkages, gears, racks/pinions, slides, bearings, bushings, springs and cams
  • Design and integration of motion control systems utilizing stepper and BLDC motors, linear actuators, belt drives and ball-screw drives
  • Design and integration of complex plastic disposable cartridges, flow cells or disposable devices used for diagnostics, sample processing or assay automation
  • Design and integration of micro-fluidic, fluidic and/or pneumatic system designs utilizing pumps, valves, accumulators, regulators, pressure sensors, flow meters and manifolds
  • Design and integration of thermal systems utilizing TECs and resistive heaters and thermistors/thermocouples/RTDs
  • Design and integration of opto-mechanical systems such as high-speed, precision stages, positioning and alignment systems, vibration isolation systems and mounting structures for optical elements

PREFERRED:

  • Experience working at both small startups and large companies
  • Experience interfacing directly with customers and clients
  • Experience with techniques such as microarrays, DNA sequencing, ELISA, PCR, qPCR, HPLC, electrophoresis and fluorescence microscopy
  • Understanding of biochemistry, molecular biology and diagnostic assays
  • Proficiency with FEA/CFD simulations via SolidWorks, COMSOL, Ansys, Autodesk Simulation or Abaqus software
  • Proficiency with productivity, communication and analysis tools such as Teams, Project, Confluence, Jira, Slack, ImageJ, R, JMP, Matplotlib, Mathcad and MATLAB
  • Proficiency with instrument/hardware control tools such as Python and LabVIEW
  • Experience integrating optical systems such as light sources (lasers, LEDs), objectives, lenses, filters, mirrors, detectors (CMOS/CCD/MPPC/PMT) and auto-focusing systems into scientific or diagnostic equipment
