Job Title: Director of Electrical Engineering

Reports to: VP of Engineering, Product Development


As the Director of Electrical Engineering within Paramit’s Product Development Group, you will lead a team of Electrical and Electronics Engineers responsible for the design, development and systems integration of electrical sub-systems for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices, as well as their associated consumables/cartridges. The Electrical Engineering Group owns several critical aspects of every project such electrical system architecture, PCBAs, displays, power supplies, sensors and harnesses. 

As a product development firm, our primary focus is to help our clients develop and commercialize cutting edge technology and products. Our clients range from young start-ups to well-established companies. Projects are typically fast-paced, technically diverse and rely on a close-knit, interdisciplinary team comprised of a Technical Project Manager, Systems Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Optical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Firmware Engineers, Software Engineers, Consumables Engineers, Industrial Designers and Product Development Engineers. These teams work with Paramit’s world class manufacturing group to seamlessly transition our client’s products into manufacturing using our transfer-less process, which results in reduced time-to-market and fewer issues.


  • Oversee the development of electrical systems and sub-systems for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices
    • Analyze existing product requirements and specifications. Generate additional requirements and specifications, as needed
    • Lead or participate in all concept and architecture development activities as well as PCBA design reviews
    • Lead or participate in all board bring-up, integration, test, debug and verification activities
    • Ensure that all requirements and specifications are being met and that all electrical systems, sub-systems and components are being designed or selected for performance, reliability, cost, manufacturability and serviceability
    • Work closely with Firmware Engineers to define firmware architecture, review code, and facilitate integration and testing activities
  • Supervise a group of Electrical/Electronics Engineers, Test Engineers and Technicians
    • Provide technical mentorship and oversight on all architecture and concept development efforts, designs and testing
    • Provide career development advice and help set and achieve individual goals
    • Prepare performance reviews and help resolve conflicts when they arise
  • Oversee the allocation of resources across multiple projects and phases within a given project
  • Manage both customer and internal projects, when needed, especially those that are focused on electronics
  • Serve as an advisor to project managers, clients and to the internal and external technical team members
  • Serve as an individual contributor to projects, as needed, by capturing requirements, defining system architecture, creating block diagrams and schematics, performing simulations, building breadboards, creating test plans, writing test protocols and driving systems integration efforts
  • Facilitate regular engagements with our manufacturing engineers and supply chain team, at all stages of development
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring and onboarding strategies and processes
  • Help build, develop and nurture a world-class technical product development team
  • Assist in customer acquisition efforts, including proposal creation
  • Lead or assist in improvements to processes, laboratories and facilities, including the expansion of capabilities and the addition of new tools and equipment
  • Help establish long term vision and direction for the group and organization
  • Provide regular project status reports to the VP of Engineering, CFO and CEO


  • A technical leader in the engineering and development of electrical systems for life science instrumentation or diagnostic equipment
  • Extremely hands on, as an individual contributor, whether it be defining system architecture, developing concepts, creating schematics, layouts and drawings, selecting and evaluating components, bread boarding circuits, bringing up new boards, debugging, testing or creating test protocols
  • Capable of managing internal or customer projects when needed, as a technical project manager
  • Capable of providing oversight and guidance on architecture development as well as on schematic creation, layout, risk mitigation, systems integration and test plan/protocol development
  • Experienced and successful technical and people managers, in areas including, but not limited to:
    • Technical mentorship/oversight on all concept development, designs, testing, etc.
    • Career development, goal setting, performance reviews and conflict resolution
  • Customer focused, collaborative and business savvy
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience in life science instrumentation or diagnostic/medical device development. 
  • Contributed significantly to the design and development of custom PCBAs (digital and analog electronics) for at least three life science instruments or diagnostic devices, from feasibility through manufacturing
  • A high degree of energy, motivation, creativity, and resourcefulness to help solve challenging problems and develop cutting-edge products
  • Proficiency with Altium for schematic capture and layout and Altium Vault for file/revision management
  • Proficiency with integrated circuit simulation and analysis via SPICE, MATLAB, Simulink or similar tools
  • Experience integrating touchscreen displays into instruments
  • Knowledge of firmware architecture and experience with structured firmware development processes
  • Demonstrated success working closely with firmware engineers on custom board and firmware development
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook
  • Experience with design control under ISO 9001/13485 and knowledge of IEC 60601/62304 standards.
  • Knowledge of GD&T as it applies to PCBs and PCBAs
  • Proficiency with test and measurement equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, function generators and spectrum analyzers

Must have demonstrated proficiency in PCBA design and development in at least three of the following areas, in the context of life science/biotech/biomedical device development:

  • Motion control systems utilizing stepper and BLDC motors, servos and solenoids
  • Fluidic control systems utilizing pumps, valves, regulators, flow meters, etc.
  • Thermal control systems utilizing TECs and resistive heaters and thermistors/thermocouples/RTDs
  • Optical systems consisting of lasers, LEDs, detectors (CMOS/CCD/MPPC/PMT) and auto-focusing systems
  • Wireless communication using RFID, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G/4G
