Political/Community Organizer

SEIU Local 1000 is a cutting-edge Union that represents 96,000 state employees throughout the State of California. We’re looking for a Political/Community Organizer who lives and breathes for political and community action. This person coordinates engagement of our members through political action activities and prepares officers, staff and members to interact with elected officials. They also recruit state employees to act as volunteer advocates for public services, promotes the value of government and its programs, and furthers Local 1000’s purpose statement. 

This position is located in Ontario, CA.

Duties:

  • Works with staff and members to develop and implement the Union’s political program at the worksite level, identifying and persuading potential voters and delivering an appropriate, consistent message.

  • Plans, coordinates, and participates in election campaigns, including voter identification, phone banks, canvasses, and GOTV efforts.

  • Develops weekly work plans.

  • Works with members and staff to develop grassroots political structures and programs in the workplace and community.

  • Recruits, trains, leads, and motivates volunteers.

  • Trains members and staff in campaign tactics, building relationships with community leaders and elected officials, and forming coalitions to support the Union’s political agenda.

  • Works with members to increase contributions to the Committee On Political Education (COPE) by implementing programs to educate and recruit COPE members.

  • Develops and coordinates external community plans and political campaigns.

  • Performs voter registration and membership recruitment in the worksite.

  • Works long and irregular hours, travels locally, and occasionally travels overnight.

    Eligibility:

  • A minimum of one year paid or volunteer experience in grassroots political and/or community programs, assisting in the coordination of political campaigns and/or implementing community organizing campaigns.

  • Valid driver's license, reliable automobile, and valid auto insurance.

    The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated success in coordinating political and/or community campaigns and building strategic coalitions to influence public policy. 

  • Knowledge of the California state legislature and labor unions.

  • Prior experience identifying, recruiting, leading, motivating, and developing volunteers and leaders.

  • Strong commitment to social justice.

  • Effective written, verbal and listening skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and services workers.

  • Ability to work independently and execute statewide political/community programs.

  • Experience in voter files/databases, collation building, and leadership development.
