About You

In our advisory work, monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) is one of the most common services that we are asked to do. Regular reporting and accountability that MEL activities provide are no doubt important.  However, at Dalberg Asia we believe that MEL should be about more than compliance-based, rigorous evaluations for donors and high-level officers. We see MEL as integral to programme design and strategy and is often the best opportunity to course correct and align everyone that is part of a programme towards one goal.

We work closely with our clients throughout the course of the a programme’s life-cycle to help uncover important learnings that can help organizations increase their impact. Even more than MEL findings, we have found that going through the MEL process from defining indicators to assessing impact with our clients is what helps organizations uncover more about themselves and how they can work more effectively. As a result, our work in MEL is crucial to many of our relationships and consulting work.

Given the importance of MEL across our portfolio of work, we are looking for an individual with a passion and deep expertise in MEL to help lead and coordinate our Asia MEL work across many projects. We are looking for someone who will help us build and formalize the Asia MEL Practice Area into something that internally pushes our Asia MEL work to even better levels of quality and can help us to provide new and better MEL services to our clients.

  • You have a natural curiosity about the world and especially around understanding how and why social impact happens when it does
  • You care about taking a long view around building organizational institutions that last
  • You are fluent and have experience with MEL techniques, frameworks, processes, and analysis (importance on knowing to use them and how to build the capacity of others to use them too)
  • You show a thorough technical understanding of statistics (especially causal inference in both experimental and non-experimental settings), data analysis, and measurement of social impact. We are looking for someone who sees numbers as their friend
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity, like the space to work independently without too much regular, ongoing interference
  • You are a team player that knows how to build consensus and are willing to give and receive honest feedback

Specific Skills and Background

  • A Master’s degree or higher in economics, statistics, policy, or other relevant field from a top university or the equivalent’s worth of work experience
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant work experience in programme evaluation and MEL especially across multiple content areas
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Strong research and quantitative skills

1. Knowledge Management and Creation

  • Manage existing knowledge assets within firm and making them useful and usable by Dalberg Asia consulting teams working in the respective practice areas.
  • Create new knowledge assets based on past work and external best practices for MEL.
  • Harvest knowledge based on Dalberg’s past work in the respective sector and present them in interesting formats ranging from typical consulting PowerPoints, thought leadership pieces, infographics (working with the design team), thematic websites.
  • Answer to requests from Asia partners/consultants on thematically related topics and initiatives.

2. Thought leadership and business development

  • Support business development processes and projects with expert input and skills.
  • Create concept notes and proposals that help drive greater innovation and impact within the Asia practice area in Asia and Africa and keep Dalberg Asia ahead of the curve in the space

  • Use innovative communication tools (thought leadership pieces, infographics, websites, videos, podcasts,) to share the work done on projects.
  • Liaise with organizations (media houses, foundations, public and private organisations) to co-create and collaborate on events.

3. Supporting Consulting Projects

  • Work with Asia project teams to gain content expertise and help teams with their research. Conduct independent mini-research projects to create new knowledge within the practice.
  • Provide technical inputs and quality assurance on Asia MEL projects.

4. Capacity building

  • Create resources for Asia staff to learn about MEL
  • Design and implement trainings for Asia staff (and external partners) around MEL
  • Be a resource on how to think about MEL projects and methodology
