Senior Manager - Carbon Science Applications

Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet.

The Natural Climate Solutions team within the Moore Center for Science of Conservation International conducts high impact, innovative and applied research in support of advancing climate change mitigation science. The team employs a range of spatial analysis and modeling techniques, remote sensing, and GIS technologies and is seeking a Senior Manager to collaborate on activities related to identifying opportunities for maximizing the role of natural climate solutions (NCS) in support of the Paris Goal of keeping average global temperature increase well below 2 degrees Celsius. These activities include a range of applied research, such as how to evaluate the potential for embedding NCS into countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs); optimizing site identification for large-scale forest restoration; identifying commodity-based zero-deforestation pathways; and exploring options for ‘climate-positive’ approaches to offset design. The successful candidate will support a range of modeling analyses, help convene expert stakeholder workshops to tackle particular issues, provide technical guidance on climate change mitigation, and lead publication of results and outputs.

  • Collaborate on the development of spatial techniques and methodologies to identify natural climate solution (NCS) portfolios in support of priority country commitments and targets, and their implementation (particularly in relation to NDCs).
  • Support the advancement of techniques for identifying scalable pathways for driving zero-deforestation commodity production.
  • Collaborate on the design and development of geospatial tools to support CI-wide and partner reporting on avoided emissions.
  • Contribute to CI’s rapidly growing agenda on the development of ‘climate-positive’ offset design and bundling options, that target a range of public and private sector actors and investors.
  • Lead and support the design of methods, models and analyses to help rapidly scale CI’s work on landscape restoration (particularly reforestation).
  • Lead the development of associated peer-review publications.
  • Help build capacity, as needed, on new methods and techniques related to NCS, among CI field programs and partners.
  • Manage highly visible, complex technical projects and/or partnerships within CI.
  • Manage external partner relationships, including convening expert stakeholders from peer organizations and more broadly, as necessary, to accelerate delivery of the above workstreams.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment.
  • Some travel – up to 25%, often in developing countries.
  • Flexibility in work schedule in order to accommodate time differences between the Headquarters office in Virginia, USA, and field offices located in multiple time zones.

  • Advanced degree in environmental science, climate science, geography, or related fields.
  • 4-6 years work experience in scientific research and/or managing conservation or research projects or initiatives.
  • Demonstrated scientific writing experience, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Proven ability in successfully interpreting and applying scientific information, data, models and developing creative solutions to achieve practical results.
  • Proven team player able to work effectively across cultures and within and across organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to build on existing knowledge to develop new approaches.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Proficient in statistical, remote sensing, and GIS software systems and procedures, and skilled in using new software applications.

  • Proven technical expertise in spatial modeling techniques, including spatial optimization algorithms, using a range of data and information to support analyses focused on identifying natural climate solution (NCS) portfolios in support of global and national scale priority setting, country commitments and targets.
  • Proven technical expertise using a range of remote sensing techniques, image sources, and GIS.
  • Proven technical skills in programming, data processing, and statistical and geographical analysis.
  • Skilled in using software systems (Erdas, Esri, R, GDAL, IDRISI), terminology, and procedures and in leveraging new applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant climate and carbon science literature.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal guidance.
