Political and Government Strategist

Location: IN – Indianapolis



The Political and Government Strategist works with the Regional Vice President, Director of Sales, General Sales Manager and other station staff to develop and coordinate Radio One Indianapolis’ government sales strategy, and to assist in positioning the properties as a unique institution worthy of support. This individual will coordinate and assist with the preparation of grant proposals to federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as select national foundations. This position works closely with Government Affairs in DC to maximize grant support for programs.



  • Business to business sales, and superior management of both large and small accounts
  • Prospecting, cold calling, and development of new sales opportunities
  • Creation of client-focused sales plans to meet/exceed goals, and ensuring client needs are met
  • Participation in team/market efforts, meetings and events
  • Assisting with collection efforts from clients
  • Creation of client-focused sales plans to meet/exceed goals in conjunction with Target and Key Account development
  • Identifying external sources for project support, responding to specific requests for proposals that are coincident with community priorities
  • Representing the audience in the development of proposals with other institutions, and coordinating proposals that are suitable for certain agencies
  • Developing contacts with federal, state, and local funding agencies and their representatives, for reviewing federal guidelines and recommending institutional activities in order to maintain compliance
  • Close coordination with the VP, Political & Government Sales on regulatory issues is required
  • Manage and coordinate the development, writing, and cultivating of grant and cooperative agreement opportunities on behalf of the Radio One
  • Review and advise the Stations on federal and state requirements for grant programs, political advertising and make recommendations on same
  • Identify, evaluate, and solicit new program announcement prospects and opportunities
  • Work with Radio One staff to develop and refine project ideas into project proposals
  • Represent Radio One in the community among federal, state, local and foundation program officers, outside advocates for the Stations, and with legislators
  • Work closely with area vice presidents and support staff to evaluate, prioritize, and pursue potential opportunities for the stations
  • Develop, along with senior management team and outside advocates for the Stations, annual strategy for government relations activities
  • Coordinate communication and outreach to local and national offices for public officials

  • 3-5 years business to business sales experience, with experience in media preferable
  • Professional demeanor, and excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills
  • Successful track record working with major accounts
  • Web sales, and CRM experience is a plus
  • Knowledge in the following industries, radio, digital, marketing, advertising, a plus
  • Must have excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication (verbal and written) abilities
  • Must be able to draw together teams of disparate staff from across the stations toward a common goal on a strict deadline
  • Must have experience with federal and state programs
