Job Description

Position:          Engineering Assistant                                     Reports To:   Chief Engineer

Location:         Silver Spring                                                    Department:   Technical Engineer

FLSA:                Non-Exempt                                                     Station:       N/A  

Mandate:   To competently* and professionally*  assist with installation, maintenance and repair of studio, transmitting and ancillary equipment in order to maintain competitive signals in the market while complying with all FCC technical requirements. Responsibilities also include telecommunications, computer and networking systems.

Objectives (by Responsibility )


  • Take direction from the Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain station operation through preventative and corrective maintenance. 
  • Follow routine maintenance procedures and schedules for all equipment as set forth by Chief Engineer.
  • Perform initial troubleshooting and maintenance on audio consoles, audio routers, recording equipment, microphones, digital audio systems, transmitters, antennas, control systems, remote equipment, etc.
  • Provide maintenance and support of computer networks and related systems.
  • Provide regular performance feedback to management.
  • Work with promotions department to coordinate and maintain remote broadcasts as needed.

Professional Development

  • To attend all relevant skill building workshops as requested.
  • To stay current with all relevant industry information as it applies to the overall job responsibility.
  • To drive your own Performance Appraisal every 12 months.
  • To expand knowledge of appropriate rules necessary to operate a radio station as set forth by the FCC, FAA, OSHA and any and all entities that govern our operations.


  • Some knowledge of all applicable FCC rules and regulations.
  • Computer literacy in applicable software packages (Microsoft OS and Office Suite, Scott Studios/Wide Orbit automation, etc.).
  • Ability to troubleshoot broadcast equipment to the component level.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Problem-solving ability and skill in prioritizing.
  • Some knowledge of HVAC, electrical systems, UPS, and standby generators.
  • Some knowledge of telephone systems and protocols including POTS, ISDN, T1, DSL and PRI circuits.
  • Interact with management and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle pressures and deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of audio amplifiers, mixers, audio editing/processing software and ancillary
    equipment and their analog and digital interconnectivity as well as connection methods.

Education and/ or Experience

Associates or technical degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcasting Technology or related field; or

have an equivalent level of experience; SBE Certification recommended.

Licenses and Registration
Must possess valid state driver’s license and proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals, professional journals, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively and persuasively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public .

Physical Demands

May be required to lift or move up to 75lbs, climb ladders and work on elevated surfaces (e.g. rooftops). This position requires good manual dexterity for soldering, use of hand and power tools and working on small components.  Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and on  24 x 7 x 365 callout to respond to transmission systems failures to various locations
