Starting Salary Structure

New Lifeguards:

$13.42/hr.

 

New Sr. Lifeguards:

$14.03/hr.

Returning Lifeguards:

$13.82/hr.

Returning Sr. Lifeguards:

$14.45/hr.

New Lifeguard w/ EMT certification:

$14.09/hr.

New Sr. Lifeguards w/ EMT certification:

$14.73/hr.

Returning Lifeguard w/ EMT certification:

$14.51/hr.

Returning Sr. Lifeguard w/ EMT certification:

$15.17/hr.

 
 

Pinellas County Government is seeking Lifeguards for Sand Key, Fred Howard and Fort De Soto. These are seasonal temporary positions performing skilled public safety work preventing injury or death in county open water swimming areas. Employees in these positions safeguard patrons at county open water swimming areas to prevent injury or loss of life by drowning and administer first aid or Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as required. Duties include routinely working on weekends and holidays.

Lifeguard Position Specific Qualifications

  • Completion of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification or equivalent.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross or equivalent C.P.R. certification for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross or equivalent A.E.D. certification for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross Community First Aid certification or equivalent.
  • Applicants must have the ability to maintain their physical fitness to successfully complete all practical skills and testing.
  • Must be able to work other County Beach Parks as schedule and staffing demands.
  • Must pass the following Physical agility pre-hire tests:
    • 500 meter swim under 10 minutes.
    • One mile run under 8 minutes, Rescue.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver's License.

Highly Desirable

  • Current First Responder E.M.T. or Paramedic certification.
  • Coast Guard boating safety certification 8 hours.
  • Three months of responsible lifeguarding experience.

 

 

Senior Lifeguard Position Specific Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience as a lifeguard.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross or equivalent C.P.R. certification for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross or equivalent A.E.D. certification for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross Community First Aid certification or equivalent.
  • Applicants must have the ability to maintain their physical fitness to successfully complete all practical skills and testing.

Illustrative Tasks (These are examples and are not all inclusive.)

  • Maintains order and discipline among bathers and beach goers at an assigned County swimming area;
  • Rescues bathers in distress, applies resuscitation and administers first aid when necessary;
  • Operates a rescue boat to patrol swimming areas and aid in the rescue of persons in distress;
  • Inspects assigned areas to ensure proper warning signs and safety devices are properly posted or in place;
  • Assists in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness of beach areas and facilities;
  • Supervises and instructs summer classes on water safety, rescue techniques and competitive drills;
  • Receives and transmits information on hand held and base station radios;
  • Responds to and treats both life threatening and minor medical emergencies;
  • Respond and assist in coordinating emergency situations;
  • Maintains an awareness of life threatening situations;
  • Performs equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and abilities

  • Applicants must be knowledgeable in open water lifesaving.
  • Skilled in active, passive, and submerged victims as well as medical and trauma scenarios.
